Got Henna?

Henna Aftercare

Thank you for choosing my henna services! Proper aftercare is the key to achieving the darkest, longest-lasting stain possible. Please remember that every person's skin is different, so henna stain and longevity can vary, but following these tips will help you get the best results.

Before Removing the Paste

The longer the henna paste stays on your skin, the better the stain will develop. Leave the paste on for at least 4-6 hours, but overnight is ideal. You can use a lemon-sugar sealant to keep the henna on the skin, you can apply hypafix or something similar.

Removing the Paste

When you're ready to remove the henna, gently scrape or flake the paste off with your fingers or a dull edge (such as a spoon or the back of a butter knife). Do not wash the paste off with water. If needed, use a bit of carrier oil (such as coconut, olive, or almond oil) to help remove any remaining pieces.

The First 24 Hours

Fresh henna stains begin as a bright orange color and gradually deepen into a rich mahogany over the next day or so.

For the best results:

  • Avoid water for the first 12–24 hours, if possible.

  • Before your first shower or handwashing, apply a light layer of carrier oil or henna balm to help protect the stain.

  • Avoid soaps, lotions containing alcohol, and excessive rubbing and scrubbing the skin during this period.

Stain Development

Your stain will continue to oxidize and darken over the next 24–48 hours.

A mature stain is typically a rich reddish-brown color. The exact shade depends on factors such as skin chemistry, where the henna is on the body, and how well the aftercare instructions are followed.

Making Your Henna Last

Henna naturally fades as your skin exfoliates. Most stains last 1–3 weeks, with palms and soles of the feet often lasting the longest.

To extend the life of your henna:

  • Moisturize your skin regularly.

  • Apply natural oil before swimming or showering.

  • Limit long hot baths, swimming, chlorine exposure, and frequent exfoliation.

  • Avoid harsh scrubs, retinol, and exfoliating acids directly on the design.

Thank you for supporting my business! I hope you enjoy your henna, and I'd love to see how your stain develops. Feel free to tag me in your photos or share your results!
